DIYing It? Discover your ‘inner designer’!

DIYing It? Discover your ‘inner designer’!
April 11, 2016

Great interiors are underpinned by well thought-out surfaces. Amazing looks can result in any space you desire often by adding that personal touch to your tile selections. Frankly, there are so many products available now it can get a little confusing! While it’s tempting to employ a designer and let them do the research for you, it’s not always possible due to budgets or time constraints. Be not afraid! We believe there is an inner designer in everyone so let’s take a breath, relax, and get creative with our “Design It Yourself” guide.

When selecting your tiles, think about the look you want to create. Is it contemporary/modern, or a classic/vintage look, or perhaps transitional where you have a mix of new and traditional elements?

Next, consider the colour tones. Think about the colours tones you have or intend to use, warmer tones can be invigorating while cooler ones such as blue are considered relaxing, calming and serene. Neutrals are always great to work with as they look sophisticated and work nicely with other colours.

Once the colour tone is selected, think about a feature surface where you can get creative and add your personal touch. This can be done in many ways, and the following ideas are just to get you started. Textures, shapes & patterns, colours and the material ‘looks’.

Textured tiles are fantastic if subtleties and the finer details are important to you. It is a timeless and versatile approach to create a point of difference by adding a tactile quality to the surfaces. The difference can be in forms of highlights and shadows, or simply, they are irresistible to touch.

Shapes & patterns are fun to work with. The selection of tiles are no longer limited to squares and rectangles. Going beyond the norm by using a differently shaped tile can really set any interior space apart. If that’s too daring, consider utilising traditional shapes in different ways, think Herringbone, Square/Diagonal Basket etc. *3D Hexagons & Chevron Gris*

Coloured tiles can also be a design feature you can use. They have the ability to define the mood of any room. Look to your vibrant warm coloured tiles for an edgy look or the calming effects from the cooler tones.

Apart from the above approaches, there is also selecting tiles that reflect the characters of the house, e.g Modern concrete-look tiles for a contemporary home, or timber-look tiles with a rustic finish to retain the characters of a villa.
