Keep heat in and moisture out for a more comfortable home

There’s nothing like coming home to a cosy, warm, dry home on a crisp winter’s day. But many New Zealand homes have issues with excessive moisture, resulting in a home that is damp and cold. We’ve put together a few tips and tricks to help you create a more comfortable home this winter.

Condensation is a result of excess moisture which is caused by everyday activities within your home; cooking, washing dishes, showers, unflued heaters; even breathing adds moisture to the air. Condensation is most visible on your windows but it can form on any surface, causing dampness and mould; over time it can cause permanent damage to your home – your framework, carpets, and fabrics.

Here are three tips to help you reduce condensation and create a warmer, drier, more comfortable home all year round.

Keep air moving. By leaving your windows slightly open throughout the day you will allow a constant stream of fresh air into your home, while removing problematic moisture-laden air. And when you place security stays on your windows you can safely leave them open even when there’s no one home. If you’re thinking about replacing your windows you could consider passive ventilation, which allows airflow through your windows even when they are closed – an experienced window manufacturer will be able to discuss options with you.

Keep warmth in. Up to 70% of heat loss occurs through your floor, walls and ceiling; and up to 30% through the glass in your windows. Insulate your roof first, followed by your walls and floor, and trap heat inside your home with double-glazed windows – an insulating layer between two panes of glass, which can be filled with a layer of air or an insulating gas such as argon. As well as delivering the immediate benefits of warmth in winter and reduced external noise; double-glazed windows with clear glass can halve your heat-loss compared to single-glazed windows of the same size and shape, helping you lower your energy bills, as well as adding value to your property.

Reduce heat loss through window frames.Thermally improved windows place insulation between the interior and exterior part of the window frame to reduce drafts and moisture, and trap heat inside your home; providing almost 60% thermal improvement on standard aluminium windows.
