Natural Lighting in Education

Natural Lighting in Education
July 23, 2013

According to the Ministry of Education guidelines published in “Designing Quality Learning Spaces: Lighting”, natural light should always be the main source of lighting in schools. Natural lighting in schools enables energy savings, improved teaching and learning performance, better quality light and better health and well-being.

Supplemented by electric lights when natural light fades later in the day or during overcast weather, daylighting incorporation is functional, so tasks can be carried out accurately, comfortably and safely. Natural daylighting also provides a pleasant and stimulating environment.

IMG_4485The need for IMG_4477daylighting and the means of introducing daylight to interior space is nothing new, although there is more awareness as to how well planned daylight integration can positively affect working and living environments. The focus on sustainability by using a passive means of illumination has also grown.

The Solatube Daylighting System has proven to be a successful top lighting solution for commercial buildings, with education facilities around the world benefiting from this leading edge daylighting technology. Traditionally, the Solatube Daylighting System has been installed in hallways and ablution blocks, but, in recent years, following overseas trends, daylighting is designed into classrooms, library spaces and multi-purpose halls.

Naturally-lit learning environments help make pupils more alert and motivated, which in turn contributes to improved learning results. This is backed up by research such as that by Lisa Heschong of the Heschong Mahone Group in the USA (www.h-m-g.com).

Other benefits also include:

  • Energy costs can be reduced by reducing the need for electric lighting during school (daylight) hours
  • Unlike traditional windows and rooflights, there is virtually no solar gain in summer or heat loss in winter so further energy and cost
  • Pupils and teachers perform better in a naturally-lit environment
  • No maintenance is required inside or out
  • Roof domes are tough and secure
  • The natural light diffused by Solatube Daylighting Systems is ideal for teaching with learning aids such as whiteboards or computer screens as glare is eliminated
