Timber Stands Strong

Timber Stands Strong
November 13, 2013

Timber is the main structural material used for housing in New Zealand for over 150 years and in more than 1.5 million Kiwi homes.

This month, the New Zealand Timber Industry Federation released a report from BRANZ (Building Research Association of New Zealand) regarding a recent set of tests commissioned by the Ministry of Education, who were seeking to establish how much force its school buildings could withstand in an earthquake.

The experiments concluded that timber framed houses can cope with stresses three times that of the Christchurch earthquakes, and still remain standing.

This just confirms what Kiwi’s have known for generations” said Brent Coffey of the NZTIF “timber framed housing is the safest and best choice for the family home.

Timber is the kindest construction material to the environment, comes from a plentiful and renewable source and is incredibly cost effective. It is hard to understand why you would build with anything else.”

We spoke to Alan Bones, General Manager at CarterHoltHarvey Woodproducts, “Wood is fast and flexible, it allows you the flexibility to make modifications to your home during the construction process and later on. Wood is easy to work with – just ask your builder!” and he pointed out something different – “Wood will usually far exceed the minimum service life of 50 years which is required to comply with the New Zealand Building Code
