Many homes in New Zealand are not complete without the deck. This is the area where we sit back, relax and enjoy summer BBQs. However, before you build one you should consider not only what you will use the deck for, but also who will be using it.
For those who like to entertain, a deck off the kitchen or dining area is a favourite option allowing easy access back to the kitchen space. Ensure you create enough space for tables and chairs and for people to pull their chair out safely without falling off the edge of the deck.
If you have a high deck without a balustrade safety may be an issue so ensure it is Building Code complaint.
Decks are often made from timber so remember to have the timber treated or cleaned regularly.
If you intend to make your deck using tiles look into some of the great outdoor tile options available on the market. There are non-slip versions available. Tiles also need cleaning so talk to your local hardware store or tile specialist about the best cleaning agent for your tiles.
