“With over half of New Zealand’s homes already harming their occupants’ health, we welcome a licensing system that will go a long way to addressing sub-standard workmanship in our industry and reduce the number of cowboys, which is always a good thing,” says Future-Proof Building CEO, Aidan Jury.

“In short, the Government proposes to reduce the red tape and process that it requires in order to get Builders Registered. The Licensed Building Practitioner scheme will require an ongoing commitment to learning and understanding the latest practices.”

Warning

However, Future-Proof Building warns that the new system will not fully address the issues of substandard product use. There is also an continuing lack of understanding of the fact that 900,000 New Zealand homes don’t meet the temperature recommendations of the World Health Organisation.

“Homeowners should always work with a member of an organisation such as the Master Builders to ensure that there is ongoing monitoring of the builder's work and that there is some form of recourse in a guarantee,” says Jury.
