Get creative around your home

Get creative around your home
April 11, 2016

It’s amazing what you can create, transform or upcycle, with just a little patience, imagination and the right materials.

An easy place to start is to look around your home for objects that you love, but perhaps they don’t really fit into your current home.  Then think about how you could use them, perhaps where they already are, or perhaps they suit another room better, and which Resene paint colours you could add to help bring them into your current colour palette.

You can help furniture blend in by painting it a similar colour to other elements in the space.  Paint it light to match the walls for an airy feel, or paint it darker to match other furniture for a more solid and chunky feel.

If your room is looking a little plain, why not create a feature piece or a feature area?  This could be a favourite piece of furniture in a creative Resene paint finish or a feature wall in interesting Resene colours or a striking Resene wallpaper.

Make new furniture look weathered using a distressed effect, choosing your favourite weathered paint colours or stains, such as Resene Rock Salt, then sand edges that would normally get the highest wear and tear to recreate an aged effect.

Or make old furniture look new with modern paint colours or colour blocking, using geometric shapes to bring together a collection of favourite colours into one piece.

To help you get started, Resene has a gallery of DIY Projects on its website, www.resene.co.nz/projects.  Whether you want to DIY outside, inside, get artistic or involve your children there is a project to suit all ages, all abilities and all levels of patience!  If you’re new to DIY, start with a small project first, then move into more difficult projects as your confidence grows.

Best of all, with paint, if you don’t like the finish you can paint over it for a whole new look.

Happy DIYing!
