Kiwis Snapping Up Terraced Townhouses

Out with the old quarter acre paradise and in with terraced townhouses – Kiwis are embracing a new style of housing in Auckland.

Jalcon Homes’ development of 22 townhouses at Squadron Lane Terraces, Hobsonville Point are selling quickly with more than 50% sold and 17 more exciting designs just released.

Jalcon’s sales and marketing leader for the project Melanie Tracy is not surprised at how popular these Auckland homes are.

Designed by Stevens Lawson Architects each home is very well-appointed, visually striking and built to create a feeling of space and height with flowing internal spaces,” Melanie says.

“In terms of sustainability the residents tell us their energy usage is reduced by 28%, as the homes are designed to be warmer and more energy efficient. Installing modern tap ware and utilising roof water runoff decreases waste water by 30%. Overall, their homes are cheaper to run by 25%.”

However, what has interested Jalcon’s team is the number of New Zealanders who tell them living in an attached townhouse beats hands down the old Kiwi adage of paradise being a quarter acre section and standalone home.

“They are New Zealanders who have busy lifestyles and often both partners are working,” Melanie says. “Many of them have told us that a new home, which is secure, virtually maintenance free and on an already landscaped and smaller section, means they have more family time. They also like the community feel, parks, play grounds, café, local schools and facilities at Hobsonville Point.”

The first 22 townhouses are a mix of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes in red or painted brick, with a mixture of detached or internal garages and extra parking. Purchasers put down a 10% deposit of around $75,000 and no more to pay until completion.
